The answer to your problem is easy ….but it will take some time on your part.
First go to http://www.HP.com , scroll to “user’s manuals” and tick off your model number.
I just did this for you. Type “Deskjet F4100″ in the little search window ay the top of HP’s screen. Then keep scrolling and you will see “owner’s manual”. I did this and then I saw “troubleshooting”. So I know you will be able to read and download the step by step instructions. OK?
You can either read it on line, looking for “troubleshooting”, then printing problems or you can print out the pages you need so that they are in front of you when you are following the instructions.
Usually it will tell you step by step what to do.
Likely the first step is to make sure the cartridges are NOT empty, especially the black.
Then it will tell you to deep clean your printer. This is easy, just follow instructions BUT do it over and over at least three times. ( I do this quite frequently with my printer)
Now they will tell you try to print a test page. Do this and if nothing happens the next step will be to remove the cartridges and THEN the” print head.”
Look at the print head. It will have rows of brass connections and inside, where the ink is boiled (yep, it is boiled and shot through tiny holes in order to print on your page), you will see the four or five tiny circles which are the actual print head areas.
Now take a few twin-tips and a little rubbing alcohol, dip the tip in it and carefully clean each print circle or head. Don’t use the twin-tip for any other colour. Through it away and take a new one for each colour.
After you have cleaned these apertures, re-assemble the print head into your printer (carefully now so as not to damage anything) , now put back the cartridges, do another deep clean and try for a sample print sheet.
Chances are your printer will now work.
Winter time is dry time in most homes and the print head dries out and clogs the system.
Hope this works. If it doesn’t, read on in your manual for advice or let us know and we will try other methods to help you.
Don’t give up. We are here to help.

You have not used it in a month…. The cartridges have dried out.
either run a few print head cleanings to see if you can get the ink flowing again or replace the cartridges.

you should try re-onstalling the software and if that doesn’t work you might need to a have a professional look at it.

Before you start any extensive steps like cleaning the cartridges or uninstalling and reinstalling software, do one simple thing.
Try to make a photocopy. Right from the front panel. Put something on the glass, hit copy.
If it prints, it’s not a hardware issue.
If it doesn’t, it is.
If it prints, you want to troubleshoot your connection/software/drivers/
print spooler/settings.
If it doesn’t, check your cartridges/print carriage/rollers etc.
Are you getting any error messages?
More info would allow us to help you more specifically.
