Most HP deskjet printers use a registration tape to keep track of where the print head is currently located.
If that tape gets dirty, the sensor gets confused.
It’s easy to clean. Get some 70% or better isopropyl alcohol and dampen a q-tip. open the printer and look along the upper inside. You will see a clear plastic tape or ribbon with fin vertical lines. Wipe it gently with the q-tip until the q-tip no longer cleans. You may need several q-tips.
Good answer above. But I think the issue is not about the cleaning but the fact that printhead of the HP is mulfunctioning. That printer model is pretty old, it is possible (and sounds like yours is already) is not functioning properly. A reapirmen can probably fix the printhead alignment and change the printhead holder that is possibly out of alignment. But that would be probably min. $50-75. So I say, if possible change the printer with a new one, or if the banging is not bothering you too much keep it until it does not print any more. That Deskjet 692c is a pretty good printer . Too bad new HP printers from the same series are not as good.
