First thing that is checked during power up self test is whether all the covers are closed. If covers appear to be closed and you still get this message after turning printer off/on check all paper paths and print area for small scrapes of paper stuck in printer. After that it could be a logic board problem.
It could be a jam or a sensor broken
Look for any piece of paper anywhere in the system as the error may not be with the cover.
Most printer errors may not be what the error says.
