Help With Hp Photosmart C5180?

For some reason I can’t print in black in white. It won’t let me. Most of my ink cartridges are out, do i need to buy the cartrages so it can let me print in black and white or is there a problem with the printer or the connection or something?

The problem may be is that the black cartridge is low/out. Some printers will then try to simulate B&W using the color cartridges, but if those are low as well….
