i have a new hp deskjet f4140 all-in-one printer that i can not get to install onto my computer no matter what i do. i contacted the hp help and they told me that the disc that came with the printer was not compatitable with windows vista so they sent me another disc and it still will not install. does anyone know why this is happening? i know windows vista is new, but nothing will install. this is a new computer too. can anyone help me? thank you

HP printers have been notorious for having to follow the directions step by step in order to work (can get annoying at times).
I’ve found w/ XP (I know this is a Vista install I’ll get into that shortly) to totally delete any of the HP’s files (add/remove programs should do the trick). After the software is removed a safe bet would be to restart the computer (it’s Windows… it likes being restarted).
Install the software HP sent you (or the software you downloaded from HPs website) – do not have the printer plugged in. The software will install and then get to a point where it tells you to plug in the printer. Do this.
Everything should continue as normal….
Now should it not continue as normal, and also going on the assumption that you have already probably tried those above steps… intro Vista……
I have had a few “quirks” installing printers into Vista which “should” have worked but for some reason havn’t.
In Vista going to the Start Menu, then Settings, then Printers you should see a button towards the top of the windows which says “Add Printer”…
Try to use Vista’s built in ‘add printer’ .. for some reason Vista really seems to prefer this versus the manufacturer’s auto setups.

go to the HP website find your printer and see if it is compatible with Vista. if it is the the drivers for it should be on the same page.

You have to go to HP website and download the vista drivers. You will have to do this for most of your equipment, simply because the windows driver database cannot possible cataloge every driver anyone would need. And despite popular beliefe, there are many drivers out there, you just need to look for them.

http://www.hp.com, click the “software and drivers” link at the bottom left… and follow the instructions for downloading the appropriate drivers

This is happening, because Windows Vista was created to make installations easier.
They did this by making installations capable through usb ports, thats why if you buy any new printers, faxers, etc. you will see that they all have usb ports, rather than the regular connections.
It is possible to install your printer, but you will most likely need on-site professional help.
